Chronic diseases are the leading cause of death across the world. 1 in every 3 adults worldwide suffers from one or more chronic conditions. In the UAE, cardiovascular disease is the primary cause of non-communicable disease death, representing 34% of all deaths. Cancer follows as the second major cause of NCD deaths, contributing to 12%. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) reports that the diabetes prevalence in the UAE stands at 12.3% in adults. In 2021, the total cases of diabetes in adults were 990K.

Chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and cancer, largely fueled by lifestyle choices, threaten not just individual health but also community well-being. By embracing preventive medicine, we can reduce the burden of these diseases, save lives, and uplift the quality of life for people everywhere. Preventive medicine isn’t just about identifying those at risk; it’s about empowering individuals and communities with the knowledge, tools, and support to stave off chronic illness before it takes hold. From dietary changes to increased physical activity, the approach fosters long-term, sustainable health, weaving wellness into the everyday fabric of life.

Now, let’s talk about the UAE, a country that is walking the talk regarding healthcare innovation, especially in chronic disease prevention. With skyrocketing rates of diabetes and heart disease, the UAE has recognized that the key to a healthier future lies in prevention. So, what’s going on in the Emirates to tackle this health crisis head-on? It turns out, quite a lot. From government-backed public health initiatives to cutting-edge private healthcare efforts, the UAE is working to ensure that chronic disease prevention becomes a national priority. Let’s delve into some of the most innovative measures they’re taking, and see how they’re reshaping healthcare for the better.

Empowering Health Through Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi

At the forefront of this movement is Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, where the Preventive Medicine Department is leading the charge in promoting a proactive approach to health. By offering personalized care and lifestyle medicine programs, they focus on identifying risk factors early and providing the resources needed to reverse the course of chronic illness. Whether it’s advanced blood tests or modern technology for monitoring health, the clinic’s initiatives aim to empower patients to make healthier choices. This patient-centered strategy is revolutionizing healthcare in the UAE, not only treating chronic diseases but actually preventing them. Cleveland Clinic’s approach reflects the UAE’s larger commitment to healthcare excellence, positioning itself as a global leader in preventive healthcare.

National Initiatives: Tackling Diabetes Head-On

Complementing these efforts, MoHAP has been relentlessly pushing forward with national campaigns, such as the National Prediabetes and Diabetes Screening campaign, designed to catch diabetes in its earliest stages. This year-long initiative takes screening straight to public and private workplaces, focusing not just on diagnosis but also on lifestyle improvements through diet, exercise, and timely intervention. With diabetes cases projected to double by 2040, this campaign integrates artificial intelligence for smarter data analysis and early detection, ensuring the UAE stays ahead in the fight against this growing epidemic. It’s not just about numbers; it’s about changing lives through public health initiatives that offer continuous support and guidance, emphasizing prevention at its core.

Nouf Khamis Al Ali, the Director of the Health Promotion Department at the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP), underscored the advantages of the programme, highlighting its role as a user-friendly resource for employers to implement health awareness initiatives for their employees. The guide provides practical steps, innovative ideas, and essential resources designed to promote healthy lifestyles and mitigate the risk of chronic diseases. By fostering a healthier workplace, the initiative aims to enhance employee productivity, boost energy levels, improve concentration, increase job satisfaction, reduce absenteeism, and lower healthcare costs. Recognizing the crucial role of a positive work environment in improving employee health and overall quality of life, Nouf encouraged all government entities to engage actively in this health initiative.

Various early detection programs have been introduced throughout the UAE, including a comprehensive maternal and child health initiative that integrates preventive measures and screenings to enhance the well-being of women, infants, children, and families. Additionally, the Chronic Respiratory Diseases initiative targets asthma and COPD management through evidence-based strategies and evaluation processes.

MoHAP is also committed to safeguarding public health, with hepatitis eradication as a primary focus. To this end, the ministry has launched a national programme that collaborates with both government and private healthcare sectors. Since 1991, the UAE has been a regional leader in this area, incorporating the hepatitis B vaccine into the National Immunization Programme. MoHAP’s approach combines vaccinations, screenings, and awareness campaigns, emphasizing the importance of public health and a robust legislative framework to protect society from diseases.

In a further step towards advancing healthcare, the UAE has initiated an ambitious National Genome Strategy, which aims to map the DNA of its citizens. With over 400,000 samples already collected and a target of one million within the next decade, this strategy prioritizes legislation, secure data infrastructure, research capabilities, public health applications, and partnerships. As a global leader in genomics, the initiative seeks to enhance preventive healthcare by providing insights into genetic health risks and enabling precision treatments.

Key applications of this strategy include personalized oncology medicine, pre-marital genetic screening, and pharmacogenomics. This forward-thinking approach aligns with the UAE’s vision for advanced healthcare, positioning the nation as a global leader in research and innovation, and demonstrating its commitment to health and well-being.

Recently, in September 2024, the MoHAP kicked off its yearly national campaign to raise awareness about seasonal influenza, themed ‘Immunise Yourself, Protect Your Community.‘ The campaign will continue until March 2025 and is designed to improve preventive strategies, minimize complications from illnesses, promote vaccination within the community, and enhance the skills of healthcare workers through training on the latest global protocols for managing seasonal diseases.

EJADA AI: Revolutionizing Chronic Disease Prevention

Dubai is harnessing Artificial Intelligence to detect health risks for chronic diseases, particularly diabetes. This is significantly improving the quality of life for high-risk individuals and reducing treatment costs by 30%.

On January 29, 2024, the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) announced the remarkable advancements of the EJADA AI system, launched a year ago. This innovative system monitors and analyzes healthcare quality while implementing proactive measures to mitigate disease risks.

Wedad Binbraik, director of the Health Economics and Insurance Policies Department at DHA, told Gulf News that diabetes, along with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and asthma, has been selected as one of the three chronic diseases in the initial phase of the AI project. She emphasized the role of AI in identifying high risks using a variety of indicators that go beyond lifestyle factors. “We are not predicting high risks based solely on lifestyle issues anymore. AI helps link diverse factors that may manifest in different tests, providing a comprehensive narrative that extends beyond lifestyle influences,” she said.

Saleh Al Hashimi, CEO of the Dubai Health Insurance Corporation, noted that DHA has identified 30 major diseases as priorities within the system until 2025, based on Major Diagnostic Categories (MDC). This decision considers the increasing number of patients, rising claim numbers, and significant cost burdens.

EJADA AI facilitates precise planning and budget allocation by predicting diseases and offering a comprehensive view of expected costs for each condition, detailing categories such as medication expenses, inpatient care, and consultation fees. The system benefits from advanced learning models that provide dynamic predictions and risk scores, adapting in real-time to any changes in a patient’s condition.

As the first of its kind in the region and a leading global model, EJADA AI serves as a comprehensive solution for managing and preventing chronic diseases, enhancing Dubai’s status as a distinguished global healthcare destination.

IFHAS: A New Initiative for Early Detection of Chronic Diseases

Launched on June 15, 2022, the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC) introduced IFHAS, a groundbreaking program aimed at the early detection of chronic diseases through comprehensive periodic examinations. Chronic diseases are a leading cause of death both globally and locally. This initiative seeks to empower “Thiqa” cardholders aged 18 and above with thorough medical assessments, helping them mitigate the risks associated with various chronic and non-communicable diseases.

IFHAS aligns with the recommendations of global experts who emphasize the importance of prevention, healthy lifestyle choices, and early detection in combating the progression of chronic diseases. This program is part of a broader preventive examination initiative designed to enhance health outcomes for citizens in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The IFHAS program focuses on identifying a range of health conditions early, including cardiovascular diseases, mental health issues, oral and dental health problems, and common cancers. By detecting these conditions promptly, the program aims to reduce complications and facilitate timely preventive measures and therapeutic interventions.

Screenings are tailored to different age groups and are available at several licensed healthcare centers across the Emirate. Results from the tests can be obtained within 5 to 10 days, after which participants will be contacted to schedule a consultation with a doctor. This appointment will allow individuals to discuss their results and, if necessary, develop an integrated treatment plan based on medical recommendations.

By addressing the challenges posed by chronic diseases, IFHAS utilizes internationally recognized and scientifically proven tests to improve quality of life and reduce mortality through effective screening processes. Importantly, IFHAS will be implemented alongside the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi’s ongoing Periodic Comprehensive Health Screening Program (PCSP), further enhancing its impact on public health in the region.

Genomics and Chronic Disease Prevention: The Emirati Genome Programme’s Vision

A health leader involved in the nationwide initiative to decode the genetic makeup of one million Emiratis aims to position the UAE as a leader in genomics. The Emirati Genome Programme, launched in Abu Dhabi in 2019 and expanded across the Emirates, has successfully collected blood samples and DNA swabs from over 600,000 citizens.

This mission to map the genetic profiles of the Emirati population seeks to deepen the understanding of diseases, facilitate tailored healthcare, and promote the development of preventive medicine.

Mohamed Al Ameri, head of studies and special projects at Abu Dhabi’s Department of Health, highlighted that the initiative will shed light on the genetic characteristics of Arab patients, a demographic often underrepresented in previous studies focused primarily on individuals of European descent. “The existing Arab genome reference is limited. This programme will enhance current data by producing a reference genome specific to UAE citizens, driving significant scientific discoveries,” he stated.

The Emirati Genome Programme will empower healthcare providers with critical information, enabling advanced diagnoses, personalized treatment options, and tailored preventive programs. Additionally, it will enhance the ability to predict and prevent both current and future genetic diseases, paving the way for new therapies for rare and chronic conditions.

By leveraging genomics, this initiative not only addresses the immediate healthcare needs of the Emirati population but also establishes a foundation for effective chronic disease prevention in the future.

These startups exemplify the innovative approaches being taken in the UAE to prevent and manage chronic diseases. By leveraging technology and personalized solutions, they aim to enhance patient care, improve health outcomes, and reduce the overall burden of chronic diseases on the healthcare system.

As Sarah Miller, co-founder and CEO of MDBX Health, notes, “We are determined to crush the chronic disease epidemic and its profound impact on the lives of the 2.5 million sufferers in the UAE and their families.” She emphasizes that 77% of all deaths in the UAE are due to chronic diseases, many of which are manageable or preventable through proper care and lifestyle changes.

Miller highlights the inefficiencies in the current healthcare model, explaining, “The typical chronic disease sufferer will see a physician for around nine minutes every three months.” During these brief appointments, patients often receive a diagnosis, instructions, and a bag full of medications, leaving them overwhelmed and unsupported. This lack of ongoing care contributes to the high mortality rate associated with chronic diseases.

To combat these challenges, Miller founded MDBX Health, aiming to shift the focus from merely treating illnesses to actively managing health. “Where 90% of healthcare is delivered to the patient at home, we want to ensure they receive 90% of the support and resources there, instead of the current status quo,” she explains.

MDBX Health provides chronic disease support by simplifying complex care through digital tools and fostering connections between healthcare components. Their approach includes the MDBX Smart Pharmacy, which organizes and delivers medications, and the MDBX Digital Platform, which helps patients manage their treatment and communicate with healthcare providers.

By prioritizing prevention and effective management, these startups are crucial in helping patients lead longer, healthier lives while reducing the systemic costs associated with chronic disease care.

A Healthier Tomorrow Awaits

As the UAE boldly strides into a future where chronic disease prevention takes center stage, the nation is not just addressing a pressing health crisis; it’s redefining the very essence of healthcare.
